Peter Scudamore-Smith MW of the Brisbane-based wine advice label Uncorked & Cultivated on discovery in Vietnam; this city the ancient capital of Hue; staying in a grandiose villa at Ancient Hue Garden House & Villas to soak up local sites, tastes and hospitality vistas. The ancient buildings; temples, shrines, walled and moated citadel, canals and old-fashioned roads; littered with scooters, bikes and run-down mini retail stores, centre around, and along the Huong or Perfume River. Found a French-inspired, Viet-owned La Carambolle (probably translated from the yellow carambola fruit) serving five-spice marinated duck, also frites for comfort; great fish soup consomme at Le Soleil (the accommodation’s signature poolside signature eating house); then a rare meal, at a restaurant on bamboo stilts in the sea proximate; Tam Giang Lagoon (it extends for 35 km) of small whole fried lemongrass prawns, then garlic-steamed rabbitfish; the local inhabitants here. Eating memories around Da Nang by Peter Scudamore-Smith MW; not quite a retreat but easy to witness the decline of the famous crusty bread roll or Bah Mi as regional and greater influence of soup with noodles, pho, beer widely drunk not wine; and in fact one restaurant served hot La Rue but offered a glass of ice to do the job. This is the Gold Coast of Vietnam, 1 million happy people; wide and clean beaches, white sand, no plastic, hotel on hotel with strange and beguiling names, unlike Queensland’s Gold Coast where hotels are split by towering rental apartments; tried the green orientated Chicland Hotel (every balcony grew plants); too many buildings unfinished though; great and even temperatures day and night; beach dining everywhere; few seagulls but oodles of pidgeons (and coops nearby); happy road ethics (none) but it works; the eat street is the beach; occupied from daylight past dark (lights); lifesavers in dress similar to Oz; heavily patrolling; food so fresh and inviting when wrapped in rice paper + dipping sauces; chili good; some higher level dining produces an array of origin wines; China is good; Marble Mountain is healthy fun plus the retail wares, loved the chow dog patrolling the buddas; visit Da Nang.#peterscudamoresmithmw #peterscudamoresmithtastes #peterscudamoresmithmwwinepresentations #visitvietnam🇻🇳 #danang #chiclandhoteldanang #myhanhseafood #steamedgaroupa #sidiningdanang #minhchauguide #bepcuondanang #bepcuangoai #mỳquảngbàdung🍀 #mykhebeach

When in Hoi An where to eat for lunch; first seek one with a menu choice; the higher end force multiple courses (13+); here an enjoyable read and short; good; easy to find an appetite; friendly and helpful; that’s Tok; clever assortment of root vegetables- beetroot, sweet potato; cucumber dipping sauce; snapper sliced fat and thin, fennel infused, pan-fried too crispy, on apple, lotus seeds, mild chili oil; egg plant rolls, delish on rice, radish, mustard; clams steamed in garlic, wine broth, that terrific Viet crusty bread, bravo; was surprised by the standard of doppio (actually arabica); wine was Bordeaux rose from Entre deux Mers; fresh 2023 (other roses older- no thanks);vista of irrigated rice was soothing.#peterscudamoresmithmw #vietnamtravel #hoian #tokrestaurantandbar #bordeauxrose #fablocalfood #agriculturalvista #friendly #recommended #tokhoian

Peter Scudamore-Smith MW of the Brisbane-based wine advice label Uncorked & Cultivated on discovery in Vietnam; this city the ancient capital of Hue; staying in a grandiose villa at Ancient Hue Garden House & Villas to soak up local sites, tastes and hospitality vistas. Final visit by North American wine tourists on Fine Vintage Ltd’s Australian Wine Tour led by local MW Peter Scudamore-Smith at Langmeil in Tanunda. Barossa Valley; hosted by Barossan-born James Lindner; experience of sparkling shiraz, a 12-yo serial blend, a visit to the Orphan Block where 140 yo shiraz had been transplanted for housing; Eden Valley riesling and chardonnay, Valley floor shiraz and with excitement, tasting 2021 and 2014 vintages from what’s reported as the oldest Shiraz plot in the world, Freedom Shiraz planted 1843; and wonderful hospitality with a James Lindner chef Aussie BBQ.

A great morning visit to Magali Gely and French-experienced Kiwi Peter Snell’s Spinifex winery, Nuriootpa by the Fine Vintage North America Australian Wine Tour hosted by Peter Scudamore-Smith MW; a focus on lesser planted old vine expressions like chenin blanc and cinsault was enlightening; a Barossa and Eden Valley sourcing, a clever inclusion of warm region grapes that hug this climate; as with grenache gris and counoise; plus riesling, grenache, shiraz and mataro; stalwart grapes in this region, processed sympathetically.
